Mother’s Day ideas (a.k.a. an interview on ABC.com)
2008 May 5
I was interviewed last week for this very extensive piece on buying last-minute Mother’s Day gifts. Check it out if you’re into, you know, reading. It’s kind of fun to be featured alongside editors from In Style and the Oprah magazine! Plus, I got some decent Mother’s Day ideas myself. (Mom, maybe don’t read this article after all … you’re proud anyway, right?) Here’s the Cliff’s Notes version of what I recommended:
- Read CNET.com before you shop for consumer electronics!
- Flip Video Ultra
- A dedicated photo printer like the HP Photosmart A826
- Asus Eee PC (4GB, it’s the cheapest)
- Carbon offsets or other green gifts from TerraPass
Enjoy, Happy Mother’s Day, and wow, it actually is getting on last-minute, eh? Maybe less recommending and more shopping …

Molly – the Flip Video Ultra is amazing and a great present. put it in a pocket or purse and you are set! The only issue is that you want to be careful of the device as it is fairly fragile. we have been pleased with the customer support for this device and hope to have our first broken one replaced soon. we will have 2 or 3 working flips in our house just because of sheer awesomeness.
I did a video comparison the Flip Ultra vs the Panasonic SDR-S10 and the Flip Ultra won hands down. Plus the Flip is cheaper.
Check out the video:

I know, I desperately want a Flip, but can’t justify it, because our digital still camera takes video that’s just as good AND we have a digital video cam. I need to break one of those.
Its the battery and the form factor that is what you need to focus on. We have two expensive digital video cameras that we never use. Battery is always dead or close to dead. By the time it is charged, the thing we want to film is over. Same with the still camera. The fact that the Flip can take 2 AA batteries makes more difference (to us) than I can possibly say.
